Résumé

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of indoor air quality (IAQ) since SARS-CoV-2 may be transmitted through virus-laden aerosols in poorly ventilated spaces. Multiple air cleaning technologies have been developed to mitigate airborne transmission risk and improve IAQ. In-duct bipolar ionization technology is an air cleaning technology that can generate ions for inactivating airborne pathogens and increasing particle deposition and removal while without significant byproducts generated. Many commercial in-duct ionization systems have been developed but their practical performance on pollutant removal and potential formation of byproducts have not been investigated comprehensively. The results in this study showed that the in-duct bipolar ionization technology can significantly improve the particle removal efficiency of the regular filter, while no significant ozone and ion were released to the indoor air. © 2022 17th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2022. Résumé

Rotating biological contactors (RBCs) were first used as pretreatment units for hybrid constructed wetlands (HCWs) in practical engineering to treat polluted river water. The experimental results during 2019–2021, except the period of global COVID-19 pandemic (January to April, November and December in 2020), indicated the average removal efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+–N), total phosphorous (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were 95.06%, 41.03%, and 45.46%, which met the Chinese Environmental Quality Standards Ⅰ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ (CEQS Ⅰ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ), respectively. RBCs and HCWs had synergistic and complementary effects on purification efficiency, especially on nitrogen removal. The remarkable nitrification efficiency of RBCs was not influenced by temperature and influent loads. The relative abundances of microorganisms at HCWs in cold seasons were comparable to that in warm seasons, which promoted the recovery of decontamination efficiency after overwintering. These results support RBCs combined with HCWs (R-HCWs) is an effective polluted river purification process, providing a new perspective on water ecological restoration.

Résumé

The Virtual Special Issue (VSI) "New research on reduction and/or elimination of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture and application of chemical products" was initially associated to the "International Conference on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Engineering, GreenChem-20" that was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Anyway, the international conference will take place in the near future. However, the VSI was maintained in this journal, received a high number of submissions, and selected manuscripts have been accepted after peer-reviewing. The published papers constitute a set of high-quality contributions, which, in the future, could be complemented with others related to additional conferences about similar topics. In this editorial piece, the Editors include brief comments on papers accepted for publication in the Special Issue, as well as additional aspects of interest related to the subject.
